WOMANPRODUCER: a multi-dimensional archive of sonic innovators
Concept, creative direction, curation, content
WOMANPRODUCER is a multi-dimensional archive of sonic innovators, comprising an internet archive, an Instagram, and a series of live events.
In 2015, stories about the legacy of female, trans and non-binary producers were hard to find. After years of co-producing music with Melissa Dyne and seeing no representation of producers who resembled ourselves, we decided to create our own. As we explored, it turned out there was an abundance of evidence out there of sonic innovation by producers less-represented in the gender spectrum, simply waiting to be communicated.
The project began as a website and an Instagram feed, and expanded into a performance series at National Sawdust in fall 2016. The series brought together artists from across genres and eras for conversations and performances, including Neko Case, Zola Jesus, Pauline Oliveros, Suzi Analogue, Miho Hatori, Yuka C. Honda, Mirah, Val Inc, and The Blow.
